Welcome,
It is a pleasure to introduce you to ASA-of Michigan. Nothing of this sort has ever occurred here in Michigan where the African groups on various Michigan campuses have come together to work in different aspects alongside having fun and networking.
We have observed that there are stronger African groups in some schools than others and when particular sets graduate so does the group. We would love to see a legacy continue in our colleges and universities. We would love to use this forum to allow schools support each other in ideas and participation of events. In the event that one graduates, it will be lovely to say that I can network with my fellow brothers and sisters from either their schools or another to find jobs and business. We have established ourselves as the national headquarters for African Student groups in Michigan.
Brief History
African Student Association of Michigan is the student branch of United African Community Organization (UACO) Michigan. ASA – Michigan is of the (17- 40) age group which includes undergraduates/ graduates…and professional school students. It also serves as an umbrella group for all ASA groups in Michigan. The group was formed in March of 2007. We were seven members from different schools in Michigan including Wayne State, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and Eastern Michigan. That particular year we launched a weekend Leadership conference which included workshops, seminars and discussion panel. We also had a picnic and an evening night party. This conference today has been split into three separate events Leadership conference in January, Awards Banquet in May and our ASA Olympics Picnic in August. In 2009 we launched our magazine ASA- Echo which covers African and student issues. This magazine is created by Michigan African Students and is used as a fundraiser towards our Scholarship fund.
